Major Overview

The Master of Arts in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) is designed to prepare students who are interested in English language teaching in an EFL context and in acquiring research knowledge and skills that can be applied to language education research. This course not only introduces students to fundamental theories and practices that link to English language learning and teaching, but also aims to develop students' advanced understanding of interrelated areas of knowledge embracing theories of language education, curriculum development, educational psychology, language testing and assessment, research in language education, statistics and many more. Not only that, the course is intended to prepare graduates to be capable of integrating various language theories into practice by involving them in real-world thesis writing.

Learning Outcomes

Upon the completion of the Master of Arts in TESOL, graduates will be able to:
- develop a broad, yet refined understanding of learning and teaching theories/ concepts, pedagogical issues and research methods, both quantitative and qualitative, in English language education;
- acquire relevant and practical knowledge of linguistic issues in teaching and testing English;
- develop critical and analytical thinking and writing skills to complete a research thesis;
- demonstrate professional competence in teaching English in an EFL context, especially the four macro-skills, and in English language education research.
